Leadership ….

Maybe I’m looking at this whole Leader / Leadership thing wrong.
Ah … “Leadership” … limited to the chosen few … those exalted elitists at the proverbial top of the human food chain. Those who are born with that something “special.” Whereas the masses who were not fortunate to get the right DNA combination to allow them to contribute at the highest level are destined to be the Followers.
That’s okay. Leaders need Followers. But more importantly … those Followers MUST HAVE Leaders, because without Leaders, those poor Followers … what would they do?
Ever watch any gathering of people? I mean, like a crowd. There is usually only ONE with the megaphone. Huh? Only one? Why is that? Because that’s the Leader.
I don’t claim to have special powers, I don’t claim to be omnipresent (or is that omnipotent) whichever is correct – I am just making an observation, not stating a revelation of biblical importance. Just hopefully a thought provoking idea.
There are Leaders and there are Followers.
In my opinion – and that means “opinion” – not a scientifically supported judgement based on proof or certainty – it is just an idea … something to think about …  there is a world of difference between Leadership and Leaders. So far as Followers, not so much.
Leaders are the ones who show the way.
Okay. So, they show the way, big deal.
Who do they show it to? Well, the Followers. Then the Followers decide if they want to follow.
No, wait a minute, that can’t be right.
If a Follower decides, then that implies the ability to establish a different point of view and that is a Leader’s job, so that Follower isn’t really a Follower, but a Leader of a different kind.
CRAP – this is so confusing! So, is that a Leader or a Follower? Or is that Follower a Leader?
It is these types of thoughts that require … wait for it … wait for it … Leadership.
Say WHAT?
Leadership? Isn’t that the stuff that Leaders do? Followers can’t have Leadership, because if they have Leadership then they aren’t really followers – they are just Leaders of a different kind.
Maybe I’m looking at this whole Leader / Follower thing wrong, too.
Maybe the Leader is just the Follower at the front of the herd; showing the way.
Maybe it is time to modify our vocabulary. Maybe we need a better definition of Leader. The Follower’s deserve to be informed of what Leader means and the Followers deserve to be informed of what Leadership means. Apparently, the Leaders are doing a poor job of distinguishing between the two.
Okay then, the Leader is the one out front.
Let’s use an exercise class as an example. The guy up front is the Leader. He shows the Followers how to do the exercise. The Followers pay their money to the Leader. That’s a Leader.
Where is the Leadership?
Well, that’s different. A different kind of Leader. You see, a Leader is the one up front. The Leader shows the way …
hmmm, I don’t get it! This CRAP is confusing.
Where is the Leadership?
Leadership is NOT the one up front. That’s the Leader.
So, Leadership is not being the Leader?
CRAP! Now, that’s really confusing!
So, what is Leadership?
Leadership is not a position. That is what we mean when we say Leader, the position.
Leadership is … are you ready? … “the action of leading a group of people or an organization, or the ability to do this.”
So, now you know. That the Leader is a position and that Leadership is the action.
The difference being, that to be a Leader, all you need to do is get out front; however, Leadership requires “Leading,” and that is a verb … and a verb denotes action. Leadership is the action of leading.
The question is no longer about Leaders and Follower or even Leadership.
The question then becomes … So, what was the question?
This CRAP is totally confusing.
Go ahead and “Google” Leadership … About 790,000,000 results (0.75 seconds)
That was so helpful!       (I really liked … “11 Ways to Define Leadership.” 11 … not 10 or 12 … exactly 11.)
Apparently, I am not the only one who is having difficulties with this whole Leader / Leadership thing!
WHAT? Wait a minute … I am an expert in Leadership … I wrote a book. I lecture on Leadership. I teach Leadership. I am a Leadership … guru … ninja … savant … sage … scholar (okay, I used MS Thesaurus for the last 2.) BUT you get the idea.
Leader and Leadership are terms that have different meanings depending on the context.
We have plenty of Leaders (and I am NOT even going to get into good versus bad Leadership … there are plenty of academics who are expounding on that topic!) What Leaders need is Leadership.
Leaders may be born or made … depends on the situation, Leadership may be taught or may be a birth right … depends on the situation. What is needed is both. So, whether you need to learn how to be a Leader of if you need to learn Leadership … I can teach you!
I am glad I could finally clear up any confusion on this matter. There you go!
Your thoughts?

A Hollow Shell

Everyone begins existence complete, it’s just that not many realize it so this produces a need to reach for it. Most people have a sense of lack in their lives so the reaching seems natural, but it’s not.

Constantly reaching for things on the outside keeps one in the grip of the need to reach because it’s as though it creates a hollow shell. The reason why reaching is done is to try and fill the hollowness, but the reaching for things on the outsides keeps the reaching in place, thus the hollowness remains; the dog chasing its tail syndrome. Only by looking inward does the hollowness begin to be filled, but what really happens is it simply collapses because the outside hold weakens. Years of conditioning makes the hollow shell almost impossible to crack and it’s unfortunate because many never get beyond the hollowness. I did say almost impossible because the slightest turning inward is all that’s needed. Once looking outside ceases because the lies are exposed, looking inward becomes the technique of choice and it has a snow ball rolling down a hill effect; it just naturally picks up momentum.

Outside reaching is used as a protection technique so one doesn’t have to go inward. The greatest lie that we tell ourselves and constantly reinforce it is, we need something to be complete, but there’s nothing further from the truth. Everyone begins existence complete, it’s just that not many really know this, hence the need to reach for it. Most people have a sense of lack in their lives so the reaching seems natural, but it’s not. We’re not meant to be hollow and it’s only so because of the conditioning we develop. Once the slightest crack occurs, everything changes because the inward view reveals truth and although we live a lie for most of our lives, when truth is revealed the hollowness implodes as the truth sets you free.

What's Your Story

To not create stories one has to not mind what happens. When one wants things to be different, your power is transferred to whatever it is that’s wanted different and hence a story is created.

If you don’t see the story that you live your life by, you become it and it takes you on the ride of whatever the story is. There’s the story of not feeling well, or of something that happened in the past. There’s the story of your favorite team playing or work. How about the family story, or the story of just wanting things different. The stories shape your life because of attachment, not because of what happens. These attached stories are where emotions arise from, they’re where fear, discontent, and anger form and gain their power. This is what attachment does, it takes the power away from you and hands it over to the attachment. Without attachment you have the power of how what happens in your life affects you, not so when there’s attachment. You cannot relinquish control without attaching a story to what happens.

This is how it works, throughout the day if there’s not some sort of technique in place to remain present, the story begins and your power gets transferred to attachment. It doesn’t matter what the story is, that you have transferred your power to an outside source is what matters. It’s outside because now objects, people, and circumstances control you and here’s the kicker, you alone have done this. So how do you not do this? The first thing is to understand what’s written here so you see what you’re doing. As summer approaches think of this, you may not be able to get rid of all the dandelions on your lawn, but if you learn to not mind them, they won’t be a problem. Basically what has to be done in order not to create stories is, not mind what happens. If you want things to be different, your power will be transferred to whatever it is that’s wanted different. So watch your stories, don’t mind what happens and even though you may have a lawn full of dandelions, it won’t matter to you all that much.

False Foreshadowing

When I was finalizing the third draft of Spheria, I engaged three fantastic beta readers who gave me invaluable feedback on what worked and what didn’t. I changed a good deal in the book based on their feedback and recommend this step as a best practice for all writers. For detailed information, please see my Novel Creation Process.

It seems I had a little problem with Diet Coke. Let me elaborate.
Diet Coke

I am a huge Diet Coke fan. I consume way more of this substance than is realistically healthy. I have attempted to wean myself off it many times, but the process is futile. Now I accept it as my vice and compared to other possibilities it’s not so bad. I may not be alone. I worked at a company where we stocked free beverages and Diet Coke was the most popular drink by a wide margin.
When I wrote my first draft, I made the assumption that since I love Diet Coke, everyone does. So in about five scenes, with five different characters, they were drinking a Diet Coke. One, in particular, chugged and savored it after a flight (this scene was eventually deleted.)
One of my beta readers, Therese, after completing a read through, made the statement, “I was expecting Diet Coke to have some involvement in the climax since it was mentioned so many times.” I guess what I created here was False Foreshadowing.

Red Herring

Isn’t this just a red herring? I think it's not and for a subtle reason. A red herring is defined as “something, especially a clue, that is intended to be misleading or distracting from the real issue.” The key word in the definition is “intended.” In my Diet Coke example, I did not put that foreshadowing in there intentionally, but it would have left the reader feeling gypped, as it did Therese. It was not misleading; it was just irrelevant.
Fun Fact: the term Red Herring originates with hunting dogs. The salting process that turns a herring red creates such a pungent fish that they were used to throw hunting dogs off a trail.

False Foreshadowing

I googled this term and found only a couple mentions in a different context: to describe foreshadowing that ends up being the opposite of what the reader expected. I think that’s more in line with a red herring, actually. Or if I had to make a term for it, I would call it “Deceptive Foreshadowing.”

So here is my definition of False Foreshadowing:
1: When you unintentionally include clues in your story that makes the reader suspect foreshadowing but which turn out to be irrelevant.

I think this is analogous to another more common writing mistake: word repetition. It is never good to use the same word over and over in a short span of space. Never do this. It is never fun for your readers.

Solution

Once this was pointed out to me, it was simple to fix. I left two scenes in with Diet Coke, changed another to Dr. Pepper, change the fourth to Iced Tea, and removed the fifth altogether.

So there you go – avoid False Foreshadowing!

Who Your Aren't

Learn to let what happens to remain where it occurs. Once something is done it is done, there’s no need to create a burden out of it, that is unless who you think you are needs to do so.

Learn to never hold onto the conditioning that arises which makes you act and feel a certain way. Who you think you are is not who you truly are nor is it who someone else thinks you are, so why make it so? This is a very valuable lesson to learn in this process of life, if one is to truly experience peace. We get so caught up in the nonsense of the Conditioned Mind that instead of being able to remain present and not attach to our conditioning, we actually give it the energy needed for it to remain in place and block out the underlying peace that’s available. Peace is always there, but it’s blocked out by Conditioned Mind energy that we ourselves allow. You may not always act in a manner that you or anyone else deems appropriate for a given circumstance, but it’s never who you are so there’s reason to hold on to it and make it so. Non attachment to who you think you are has to be the energy one is leaning on if there’s to be any semblance of peace.

Why is non attachment so critical? It’s because there’s so much non loving reactions due to the conditioning in place, that if there’s attachment you will keep going round and round in its circle. You do something, it’s attached to as being who you are, so now it’s labeled accordingly and hence there’s no peace. This is attachment energy and there’s no peace here because the energy creates bondage to who you only think you are; not who you truly are. Learn to let what happens to remain where it occurs. Once something is done it is done, there’s no need to create a burden out of it, that is unless who you think you are needs to do so.

One or the Other

It’s very simple to understand the mind, it can be broken down into two mind states, wholesome and unwholesome and everyone who is alive will be guided by one or the other.

There’s a lot of stuff (thinking) that goes on between the ears that determines what mind state one will be guided by and when broken down, you will be guided by one or the other. To me everything that happens is the result of something else, so the results of living in a state of wholesomeness or unwholesomeness are vastly different. This isn’t to apply a label that one is right and one is wrong, but if investigated it can be seen how wholesomeness produces results more in line with love, kindness, peace, harmony, joy, and unwholesomeness puts one more in line with results of anger, greed, hate, unhappiness, and discontent. I had an unwholesome mind for many years and this resulted in much suffering in the form of feeling isolated and alone most of the time. As a result of this, I used many different things to try and not feel this way, but to no avail because not matter what, the isolation would always return.

Nine years ago I begin understanding the different results of these two mind states and began developing certain things that put me more in line with a wholesome mind. An unwholesome mind is selfish in nature and produces selfish results, desirable results if you’re based in the material world. A wholesome mind has no selfishness to it and the results are accordingly. This doesn’t mean that the unwholesome conditioning is gone for good, but it has lessened to a large degree and hence there is literally no more isolation, or hate in me. If the difference of these two mind states aren’t seen, it seems the unwholesome state controls more. I would say it’s because of the influences of the material world that make this so. Even though by being alive you are part of the world, when you finally wake up, what’s seen is you don’t have to allow the selfish collective mind state of the worlds unwholesomeness to control you.
