Suicide and Despair

Lately, there seems to be a rash of suicides that has shocked our country. Well-known celebrities, who seem to have the world at their feet have experienced depression and despair and have taken their own lives. Some we have lost include Robin Williams, Kate Spade, Jonathan Brandis, Kurt Cobain, Alexander McQueen, Don Cornelius, Simone Battle, Owen Wilson, and Lee Thompson Young. Then there are those who accidently killed themselves through alcohol and drug abuse, such as Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston and her daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, Prince, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and the list goes on. In addition, there is an increasing trend of mass shootings ending in suicide across the country.

The map below shows the 2016 results of a report compiled by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention1. The statistics are alarming. According to the report, 45,000 lives were lost to suicide in 2016, more than twice the number of homicides. Among ages 15-34, suicide is the second-leading cause of death2. Much of the problem is due to alcohol and drug abuse. “The CDC has calculated that suicides from opioid overdoses nearly doubled between 1999 and 20142.”

As an educator for 23 years and more currently a counselor at a school for at-risk students, I have increasingly been involved with students who have considered killing themselves. Last year our district formally introduced a “safety plan” to address the increasing cases of depression and thoughts of suicide among our youth. We hear these incidents more frequently in the news daily. I have stopped watching the news. It greatly saddens me to hear stories of depression and despair and wasted lives.

There is a war intensifying in our world that is being overlooked. Satan has declared all out war, especially on our youth, that goes unnoticed. In Revelation 12, a war in heaven is described when the Archangel Michael victoriously led his angels against Satan and cast him out of heaven and into the earth. The Kingdom of Heaven rejoiced because the “accuser” has been conquered. He was conquered by the blood of Christ, who is able to save us and redeem us from Satan. However, a warning is given: “Woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” (Revelation 12:12). The battle is escalating, and we can see it in the news daily.

Our society at large sees these social problems of suicides, mass shootings, and violence as an increase in mental health issues. Let us not deceive ourselves. This is a war between good and evil, an all-out confrontation between God and an angry Satan, who knows he does not have much time left. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). This war is between love and hatred. The devil intends to steal as many as he can from the loving arms of God. The devil uses our selfishness to drive others out of our lives. He uses loneliness to isolate us from God and those who love us. He uses depression to stir hatred of ourselves.  He uses drugs and alcohol to destroy any love left in us. Satan drives us to despair. This war affects our young people the most, and they have no defense. There is no defense in a Godless world. Those who have succumbed to suicide and violence live in a Godless world of their own making.

More and more each day, God is being removed from our society. He was removed from our schools when prayer was prohibited and from public places when the commandments were removed from the Oklahoma State Capitol. God was removed from our speech, when it became inappropriate to say we were on Christmas or Easter vacation. Now we take winter and spring breaks. Christians who believe that homosexuality is wrong have been labeled “haters,” and those who profess their Christian beliefs are mocked and ridiculed as narrow-minded and naïve. The German supermarket Lidl and Nestlé have removed the cross from the image of the Anastasis Church in Santorini on their labels so as “not to hurt sensibility of other religions.3”

Only the love of God can conquer evil. Depression causes us to fall into a state of self-preoccupation. It isolates us from others, especially from those we love and love us. It is a form of selfishness, which can lead to despair and hopelessness. Depression can only be staved off by coming out of the cycle of self-preoccupation by showing love to others. When we give love, we are giving our life purpose and meaning. Christ taught, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). The Greek word for blessed translated means “happy, having a peaceful soul.” Thus, acting in love and giving love is what makes us happy in life. The only hope we have is in Christ, who brings light into the darkness of our world and who gives us the ability to love others as He loves us. “But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). A godless world has no hope, since there is no heaven or eternal life. A godless world does not know the love of God.

As the world darkens around us, it is up to Christians to be lights of the world through our love and good works. “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). We are Christ’s ambassadors to the world. When God places opportunities in our paths, we must take up His banner and “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness.  Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called” (1 Timothy 6:12-13).

For those who do not yet know the love of Christ, simply ask Christ to reveal Himself to you. Repent of your sins, of those times you did not show love toward others. Christ will respond, and you will have an opportunity to know Him personally. Ask Him to lead you to a church where you will grow as a Christian and thrive. Ask Christ to reveal His love to you. You will be blown away!

If you know anyone who suffers from depression or has expressed thoughts of suicide, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline phone number at 1-800-273-8255.

Death

Death is that reality, which every human has to face in his life. It is the stark truth and no matter what it is the ultimate end, to which every human comes to and he has no way in which he could escape it.
From time immemorial, we have seen the struggle of man against death, if we read our scriptures, then. we come to know how our  learned ancestors, tried their best to find a way to immortality, a way out , so that they continue to live forever. They might be suggesting, having various potions, or performing various meditative procedures, or doing end number of scientific techniques, so that death is defeated and life goes on forever. But, sadly, till date, man has not been able to win the battle against death.
When I try to think closely, as to what is death, then it is that end, which ends the journey called Life and probably takes you on a new journey, of an afterlife, about which no one can say definitely, that, yes there is journey of the soul, and there is something called rebirth. There have been end number of speculations, in a  number of areas of study, which give confusing conclusions, which are again extremely baffling.
But, all in all death is a reality and not only humans, but every living being has to face it.Everything on earth has a definite life span and to end, is the natural outcome, of any living being, whether it is an elephant, a whale, or an ant, death is inevitable.Life is like that, it has been designed, by the Almighty in that fashion, that one life ends and then as time passes more lives take birth and life goes on, just in the same way, as an old tree dies and a a baby tree grows into a handsome new tree!
Now coming to the stark and most depressing part about death. When a person dies , he leaves grieving relatives behind, an irreplaceable vacuum, which cannot be filled ever, the memories, the presence  of that person in your life and what he meant to you, remains with you forever. No one can ever get over the death of a loved one, the bond that he shares with the one he has lost cannot be replaced, ever.He/she lives in hearts of his beloved forever and in that way he has attained immortality!
One another utterly depressing aspect of death, is that a person's alive and laughing self is replaced by a photgraph on the wall!If I lose a loved one, then the only way I can see him personally is, other than my memories, is a picture on the wall and then I  try to comfort myself by emotionally relating to that picture and talking to it, just like we are talking to that loved person in real!
The Lord Almighty has designed our memories in such a way, that as time passes, the pain of losing that person fades away and we try to move on with Life, but the vacuum remains and a wise person, should understand that the person who he has lost , has only left him physically, if he tries then he can retain him in his memories and never feel that he has actually lost him!
Birth and death and the two most consequential realities, if you are born then you will die, so why fear death, what has to happen will happen, no matter what. If on a personal level, a person has to face the fact that he has to die and ultimately and whatever he does in his present life, or how much ever wealth and luxuries he amasses, he has to leave everything and everyone here and proceed on another journey after Death, then he will always be grounded and understand that being compassionate and understanding in whatever he does is of utmost importance.
Jealousy, Anger, Greed, hostlity, indifference, rivalry, leads a person nowhere. Whereas on the other hand, if  you are kind hearted, affectionate, honest, loving and a sensitive person, not only towards your loved ones, but towards every person around you, then you lead a good and satisfactory life, without regrets and you will accept death with open arms, as you have given love and you have got love in return!
Death is inevitable and it comes with all its might and finishes one life, which might herald another life, as they say that, death is just the end of one physical self and the soul is immortal and it takes birth in another body and lives an entirely different life altogether! The marvel of that other birth is that the new person, doesnt remember a thing of his past life, and live his life as an entirely new person. The above theory has been contradicted, time a again and every different community, thinks on different lines.
The aridness of death, makes it so domineering and repulisive, that when a person thinks of the nature of what he will actually turn into, after being alive and breathing, builds up a fear in his heart, of the unknown. Every person fights death and if you ask me why, then the clear answer to this is that, he doesnt want to leave his loved ones, he wants to enjoy his life on earth and continue to enjoy the feeling of being alive. He wants to be close to those whom he loves and enjoy their companionship.
There is no end to this discussion of what is death and what man thinks about it, but what every person should think and believe in strongly is that, one day or the other one will die, so the need of the hour is live your life to the fullest and be a kind and compassionate humanitarian soul and make your life good and of the people around you, only then you will lead a life full of satisfaction and die peacefully.

Space of Emptiness

So much of existence is wasted on trying to fill a space that doesn’t need filling. The nature of all space is emptiness and it will always be there; it’s in this space of emptiness that one experiences fulfillment.

Many spend thousands on trying to fill a space that doesn’t truly needed filling. At the time it seems like the right thing to do and in a way it is because when you’re thinking about it it seems right, but the thing to understand is wherever you go there you are and also the Conditioned Mind makes the fantasy better than the reality. This is not to say don’t do things that will fill this space, but the stark reality is this space is already filled if your mind lives in the space of peace. I’m talking from experience here because for forty nine years my life was exactly how I thought I wanted it to be and yet I had to always reach for something to fill a space that wasn’t understood. This space when lived from your conditioning needs to be filled (reaching for something), but I didn’t understand the part of wherever I went, there I was.

My own mind was an enemy not an ally and I had no idea this was occurring. Basically I always needed to fill a space that didn’t truly exist; regardless of what it was filled with it was always there. Here’s the real irony in this, I was trying to fill the space of emptiness that is still there today, but what I have come to understand is it doesn’t need filling. Regardless of what’s used to fill it, it never gets filled, it can’t because it doesn’t need filling. Today I understand this space is not an enemy nor does it need filling. There are times when it’s filled, but it’s not because I’m trying to fill it, it’s simply because the space of emptiness fills me.

Not Adding

Truly letting go isn’t a doing nor does it take effort, it’s something that happens naturally by not adding. The more one tries to let go by adding something, the less letting go there is…

One day a man who spent years reading spiritual books, going to self help and 12 step programs, spending thousands attending seminars by all the so called experts, retreats, meditating for hours on end, doing chakra and kundalini meditation, reiki healing, yoga, therapy, and so on decided he had enough. I’m sure many will identify with the constant barrage of adding the flavor of the month to learn the secret to peace. This man tried everything and yet except for being more knowledgeable, he was no freer than the day he started looking into this. Part of the issue was he was stuck in trying methods everyone else said was needed to become enlightened; most people’s methods don’t even work for themselves, if they did a method wouldn’t be pushed. This man who was at wits end sat with this and what arose in him was this; he were going to walk up the highest mountain he could find and either become enlightened or die. The one thing that was very clear was he was tired of struggling; so the journey up the mountain began.

On his way up the mountain there was a man coming down the mountain carry two large bundles on his shoulders, the path was narrow and he noticed this man was wearing monk like clothing. He had heard in stories when one is ready to awaken the right teacher will appear. As their eyes met, the man felt compelled to tell the man coming down the mountain where he was going. He asked him if he knew how to become enlightened? The man said nothing as he put the two bundles he was carrying down. Instantly the lesson was seen; the man was showing him how to let go. He than asked, is that it, just let go? The man smiled and nodded, again he asked, so that’s it, just let go, what happens next? Without saying a word, the man picked up the two bundles he was carrying, put the them back on his shoulders and continued down the mountain…
